No. 1 Prussia
When I was 17 I told myself, ‘the moment you film a band from Detroit in the full pipe of a skate park, then you’ve made it.’ So here I am, observing my potential, standing in front of a firing squad, armed with loud chants, classical guitars, bongos and a Casio.
I met the boys of PRUSSIA in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a small town 2 hrs. south of Louisville, while on tour. Ryan Spencer, the voice behind PRUSSIA, drummer, Drew Spencer, PRUSSIA bassist, Andrew Rendenok (introduced as ANDROID), Kasey Press (the techy genius who played keys and guitar) and Jake Brusokas (the second stand up drummer, as well as carrier of heavy things). They piled out of a early 90's navy blue conversion van in front of the venue. The crowd bobbed their heads and their bodies bounced up and down, as PRUSSIA pounded out their melodious charm and rhythmic enchantments. I was left singing to myself, "I like your voice, I like your arms as well," as the navy blue conversion van followed me 2 hrs. North to my house at 2 A.M.
Louisville has an unusually large out door skate park, for such a small Midwestern (or Southern if you prefer) city. We set up in a full pipe, which I discovered was too treacherous for most of the local skate boarders. "I don't do that kind of skating," I was told or, "I'm too tall for that, I don't want to hurt myself." But for our purposes it made the perfect echo chamber, and PRUSSIA offered the perfect sound.
Prussia performed a low-fi, calypso Caribbean cruise liner-esque rendition of their song "Lady Lady," off of their first full-length album, "Dear Emily, Best Wishes Molly". The otherwise piano intense album version is done squatter style using classical guitars, Casio keyboard and drum pads, Omni Chord and bongos. PRUSSIA illuminates the concrete pipe with music surrounded by the sound of wheels speeding across the pavement
and so . . . Our first SQUATTER PERFORMANCE.
